Police wasting time over ‘silly Facebook posting’

Cartoonist group activist tells of poor conditions in lock-up
Lawrence Jeyaraj_fb_polis_300KUALA LUMPUR: Freed after a day in the lock-up, an activist arrested for comments about the Anwar Ibrahim sodomy case judgement has criticised the waste of police resources over “such a silly thing” as a Facebook posting.
Lawrence Jeyaraj, of the Independent Cartoonist Group was released on police bail today after being detained since Friday for remarks he made on Facebook.
Lawrence said his arrest and detention was a waste of government resources. “I am happy to be out but they detained me because of a Facebook posting,” he was quoted as saying. “They spent so much time, effort and money to investigate such a silly thing when they can be utilising that for investigating bigger criminals.”
He was critical of the conditions of the Dang Wangi police station lock-up. “It is filled with mosquitoes and cockroaches,” he said according to Malaysiakini. “I can only imagine what Anwar Ibrahim has been going through for the past two weeks,” he said.
Lawrence was arrested on Friday at his home in Cheras on a sedition charge. He was one of a range of people who have been arrested by police recently for commenting on the Federal Court judgement.
