Sabah school denies mass conversion of Christians

The school only became aware when a police report was lodged on covert conversions conducted by a hostel warden.
sabah school_Christians_300KOTA KINABALU: Joharah Abdullah, the principal of SMK Kinarut, has denied that her school was involved in any way with the alleged conversion of a 16-year-old Christian student staying at its hostel. The school only became aware when a police report was lodged, she added.
It was the police report, she stressed, that alleged that a former hostel warden had conducted a conversion rite in secret to convert the student involved in the case.
“The school did not realize it was happening until we saw the police report,” she reiterated and denied that there was any form of mass conversion conducted at the school. “We will lodge a police report to deny that any form of mass conversion had taken place at the school.”
According to the constitution, the principal conceded that the girl was not a Muslim because her parent’s consent was not obtained. “The student had willingly made the declaration, and in her mind, she is a Muslim,” she claimed.
The school, according to her, is taking the position that the matter is best left to the student concerned and her family.
The principal disclosed that she had met with officials from the State Education Department, a police representative, Jilius Yapoo, the student’s father, as well as her elder sister.
Angkatan Gabungan Rakyat Asli Sabah (Agaras) president Michael Frederick alleged that the school warden made Christian students recite the “Kalimah Syahadah” (the profession of faith) and then declared them Muslim. Apparently, the hostel warden would give pen drives to Christian students, who often had to stay back during weekends, and then indoctrinate them.
The girl’s home was about 15 km away from the school and was only accessible by a gravel road which made travelling times that much longer. Besides, there was no readily available transportation between her home and the school.
State Education Department director Jame Alip declined comment and added that the matter would be handled by the school concerned.
Penampang MP Darell Leiking warned in a statement on Monday that the conversion of the underage Dusun Christian girl student to Islam by the very school the parents hoped would protect their child, “was an abuse of the trust placed in them”.
The school authorities, he pointed out, were regarded as guardians of the children who could only stay in hostels as their homes were too far away for them to commute daily to school. “The school concerned has not respected the sanctity of the family. They have not arranged a meeting between the parents and the child until today.”
