Former RMAF major Zaidi Ahmad is keen on joining PAS to help the Pakatan Rakyat towards a better showing at the next general election. – The Malaysian Insider pic, February 14, 2015.Sacked air force major Zaidi Ahmad, who blew the lid off problems with the indelible ink used in the 2013 general election, will join the Islamist party PAS once he obtains a new identity card as a civilian.
"I will join PAS. I'm waiting for my civilian IC," he told The Malaysian Insider when met at the launch of cartoonist Zunar's latest book in Petaling Jaya today.
Zaidi said he wanted to join PAS because it upheld Islam.
"I'm more to Islam, so that's why I choose Parti Islam Se-Malaysia. I want to contribute in this way," he said, referring to the full name of the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) party.
Zaidi was dismissed from the Royal Malaysian Air Force last month after being found guilty by a military tribunal of breaking protocol in making public announcements on the indelible ink used in the May 2013 general election.
He had found that the ink washed off easily, raising questions as to the integrity of the national polls.
After his discharge, Zaidi had made known his intention to give talks and to raise political awareness among the public.
Today he said he hoped to play a role in uniting PR, as an opposition coalition.
"I'm a middle ground person. I'm not an ustaz. Insya-Allah, I will try to play the role of uniting Pakatan especially to face the coming general election.
"Without Anwar, it is a big challenge, but we have to live with it. Hopefully, new leaders will emerge," he said.
He said people were watching Putrajaya's actions and policies closely, and this would decide how the people voted in the next general election.
"Whatever they do is being monitored by the people. People know who is right and who is wrong.
"Whatever the government wants to do, let them do, for our part, we will continue our struggle. We ask for Allah's help. Insya-Allah, in GE14, there will be a change."
Zaidi also commented on the death of PAS spiritual leader, Datuk Seri Nik Aziz Nik Mat, calling it a big loss.
Zaidi, who was to have launched Zunar's book "ROS in Kangkongland" which features cartoons of the prime minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, said the cartoonist should not be penalised for his satirical work.
Two hundred copies of the book were seized by police while being transported to the launch venue.
"Zunar is unique, because he fights through cartoons. Indirectly, he also helps in our cause and fight to uphold justice," Zaidi said.
