PAS information chief Mahfuz Omar wants to take the mother of former police commando Sirul Azhar Umar to Australia, where the latter is being detained.
He said that Piah Samad is already 74 and worried that she may not be able to see her son again.
"She is very sad, we are asking for a commitment from (the Australian High Commission) to facilitate the taking of Sirul’s mother to meet him," he told reporters.
Mahfuz was speaking to reporters after submitting a request to the Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur.
In the request, he also sought protection for Sirul, who is being held by the Australian Immigration and Border Control Deparment.
Last month, Sirul was convicted of killing Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu and sentenced to death together with another ex-police commando Azilah Hadri.
Sirul, however, was absent when the Federal Court delivered its verdict, with news later emerging of him being in Australia.
The Malaysian government is attempting to extradite Sirul but Australian law dictates that a person facing the death penalty in his or her home country cannot be deported. - M'kini
