The current deputy is widely speculated to take on his president for the party's presidential contest, the first in 22 years.
PETALING JAYA: The MIC deputy president is expected to announce his intention to contest for the post of president, making this the first time in 22 years that such a tussle will take place.
The Star reported that Subra will be making the announcement to take on current supremo, G Palanivel this Sunday.
With the inevitability of a re-election for all posts in the party, S Sothinathan currently appears to be Palanivel’s choice for the deputy post, leaving Subra in contention for his current post as well.
A former Central Working Committee (CWC) member revealed that a gathering at the HGH Convention Centre in Jalan Sentul has been scheduled with all branch leaders invited.
He said, “The president has already endorsed another person for the deputy post. Dr Subramaniam has no choice but to go for the top post.
Recently, vice-president M Saravanan was also reported as eyeing the top post, a move which a senior member felt would only benefit Palanivel as a split vote would help him maintain the status quo.
“It can be seen from Palanivel’s meetings with branches, there are always an almost full turnout,” said the member.
The last presidential contest in MIC occurred in 1993 when S Subramaniam lost to S Samy Vellu.
