BMW is sponsoring the six new cars for the upcoming 26th Asean Summit. – FB pic, April 8, 2015.BMW Group Malaysia said today that Putrajaya did not buy the six cars featured on Rafizi Ramli’s Facebook page.
BMW Group Malaysia managing director and CEO, Alan Harris, said the firm had sponsored the six new cars for the upcoming 26th Asean Summit.
“In response to the statement made by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice president, Rafizi Ramli at the Malaysian Parliament on the purchase of six brand new BMW 7 Series by the Malaysian government, we at BMW Group Malaysia would like to clarify that the cars mentioned and photographed have not been purchased by Putrajaya.
He added that BMW Group Malaysia will be providing a fleet of BMW 7 Series and 5 Series cars, which would be used to shuttle dignitaries, officials and VIPs for the summit.
In an immediate response, Rafizi said on Facebook that he was grateful public funds were not used to purchase the cars.
“I have been informed that BMW Malaysia said the six BMWs were sponsored by BMW for the Asean summit,” he wrote in Malay.
“Thank you to the public who took the pictures; thank goodness the GST (goods and services tax) money from the rakyat was not used to buy the cars."
Earlier today, the PKR secretary-general said he had been informed that six BMW 7 Series cars were parked outside a local BMW dealership, and asked Putrajaya to explain whether it had bought the cars.
He said the alleged purchases were inappropriate as it came at a time when the people were feeling the  pinch of the recently enforced GST.
Rafizi had also shared the photographs of the cars on his Facebook page, which immediately drew thousands of “likes” and comments from irate social media users.
Facebook user Mohammad Arif Zuhaili wrote sarcastically: “I wonder why they didn’t buy a Ferarri? The GST has been enforced for nearly a week now, I think… surely they have enough money to buy a Ferarri now.”
“Drive those cars carefully… I have a 6% share in it,” wrote Facebook user Robertson Lionel.
“The ministers need comfortable cars, only then they can think carefully… they do all of this for their beloved rakyat,” wrote Sheena Nsm.
