GEORGE TOWN - Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM), a pro-Pakatan Rakyat (PR) party, alleged today that Barisan Nasional (BN) had planted moles among its ranks, after learning of a plan by three of its members to field a candidate in Permatang Pauh.
Penang PRM head Datuk Gary Nair said his party’s central committee was not informed of the candidacy and suspects it could be the work of BN who, he said, is willing to “try all means” to wrest the federal seat from PR’s PKR.
“Most of the central committed did not agree, but three people in the party that is the acting president, acting secretary-general and another committee member they still went ahead and want to field a candidate.
“We don’t even have a branch there, we’re not active there, yet you want to field a candidate there, I smell a rat. It could be the work of BN to split the votes,” he said at a press conference today.
According to Nair, three PRM members behind the alleged act is acting president Ariffin Salimon, acting secretary-general Koh Swee Yong and committee member Goh Chui Loon.
He reiterated that PRM was firmly in support of PR, adding that voting for the rogue PRM member is akin to supporting BN.
“100 per cent support,” Nair said when asked if he still sides with PR.
“If I go support PRM I am indirectly supporting BN,” he added.
Nair’s response today comes after local news portal Malaysiakini on Wednesday quoted Koh as saying that the candidate they were fielding was a former civil servant who is well-known in the constituency.
Koh, however, did not name who this candidate will be.
The Permatang Pauh seat was vacated after opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s royal pardon was rejected following his conviction of sodomy and sentencing to five years behind bars on February 10.
Polling for Permatang Pauh will be on May 7 while nomination day is fixed for tomorrow. - Malay Mail
