Hindraf slams Najib for failing poor Indians

Federal Government did not live up to contract signed in 2013, says NGO.

GEORGE TOWN: Civil rights movement Hindraf has urged Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to honour and fulfill all demands stipulated under the pre-election memorandum of understanding signed between it and Barisan Nasional.
Or else, warned Hindraf advisor N Ganesan, Najib may face legal action. “The MOU is a legal contract and has the force of law,” he said today. “Najib is obliged to comply with the terms of the contract.”
He said in a statement that failure to abide by the terms amounted to a breach of contract and Hindraf was “prepared to go the full mile on this”.
He demanded a report card on the BN Federal Government’s deliverance on the terms of the agreement, insisting that Najib had to account for his government’s performance.
He pointed out that the memorandum of understanding was signed in full view of the nation in Kuala Lumpur on April 18, 2013, by BN secretary-general Tengku Adnan Mansor and Hindraf national chairman P Waythamoorthy, with Najib, the BN national chairman, as the main witness.
Ganesan recalled that Najib in a recent TV interview had said one needed documents, photographs and witnesses to prove a truth, when asked about allegations that he knew murdered Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu.
“It’s true and a truth, in Najib words, that is undeniable,” said Ganesan.
He said the Federal Government must fulfill all demands stipulated under the memorandum, which set out a five-year plan from 2013 to 2018 for the Barisan Nasional to carry out development programmes to improve the lives of marginalised lower income Malaysian Indians.
Waythamoorthy’s departure from the government when he resigned as deputy minister in February 2014 did not nullify the agreement, Ganesan said.
“Hindraf expects the BN government to fulfil its promises in the agreement, a written and legally binding document,” he said.
He said Hindraf had worked hard to realise the terms of the agreement in the first eight months, with Waythamoorthy’s involvement in the government but the effort was frustrated by lack of executive authority and budgets.
Waythamoorthy had resigned in protest and in the 14 months since, it appears that Najib is not likely to honour the agreement.
Hindraf wanted Najib to spell out his plans for meeting the terms of the agreement for the 2016 fiscal year. The agreement did not call for him just to do more than his predecessors. “Significant socio-economic interventions” were required to produce “permanent and comprehensive solutions”.
