HOW SICK MALAYSIA HAS BECOME UNDER NAJIB: 'Cabinet discussed plan to exempt Muslims from GST'

HOW SICK M'SIA HAS BECOME UNDER NAJIB: 'Cabinet discussed plan to exempt Muslims from GST'
Federal Territories mufti Al Bakri claims his proposal for Muslims to be exempted from paying the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has been brought to the cabinet.
Zulkifli, in a Facebook posting, has urged for the 6 percent tax be either reduced or abolished for those paying ‘zakat’ (tithe or Islamic tax).
“I propose a mechanism be developed so that there would not be double taxation of Muslims, which will burden the Muslim community further.
He also wants the money raised by the new tax be earmarked for development purposes.
“There must be transparency, integrity and trustworthiness as to the management of the GST,” he said in the Facebook posting yesterday.
“The people are awaiting better public transport, amenities, education and others which are considered the community’s needs.”
Zulkifli, a highly respected religious scholar, said he brought this matter up with the authorities in Putrajaya following concerns expressed by the Muslim community.
When asked whether the mufti had met Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to discuss the matter, the administrator of his Facebook replied there had been a series of meetings on the matter.
“Before posting this in Facebook, the issue was brought up in cabinet and several meetings have been held,” the Facebook administrator for the FT mufti added.
Presently, Muslims pay tithe at a rate of 2.5 percent of their savings, including gold and silver, properties they own and profit from their business.
This is on top of the obligatory ‘zakat fitrah’ which is paid during the month of Ramadan. Proceeds from such contributions go to help poor Muslims.
Poor should be exempted
Najib had earlier this month proclaimed that the GST is ‘halal’. GST, a value-added tax, came into force on April 1.
The FT mufti also urged the government to avoid confusion in the implementation of the GST.
“The mechanism to collect and distribution (of GST) should be devoid of any discriminatory element and that the poor should be exempted from paying the tax.
“A mechanism is also needed to ensure that there is no exploitation of the fund by irresponsible quarters and that it should be safeguarded for the use of the community,” he added.
Zulkifli urged that the government identify further goods and services which should be exempted from GST, such as ‘takaful’ insurance and others.
He called on the government to monitor the prices of goods and services at all levels - producers, suppliers as well as retailers - and to ensure traders do not exploit the implementation of the new tax to rip off consumers. - M'kini
