Malaysia will meet editors of the Indonesian weekly, Tempo, over its article on the "lavish lifestyle" of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Utusan Malaysia reported today.
The paper quoted Malaysian ambassador to Indonesia, Datuk Seri Zahrain Hashim, as saying that he would meet the editors as soon as he returns to Jakarta.
Zahrain is currently in Kuala Lumpur to accompany Najib to the 60th Asian African Conference 2015 in Jakarta tomorrow.
"The prime minister is of high-standing and noble descent (berdarjat dan bangsawan). His spending is not a problem if he can afford it.
"It becomes a problem only if it involves corruption and misappropriation of funds, and the like," he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.
The article in Tempo, titled "Hidup Mewah Sang Perdana Menteri" (The Luxurious Life of the Prime Minister), discussed at length the couple's reported purchases, including Rosmah's range of Birkin handbags and jewellery
Zahrain said Tempo ought to have investigated information about Najib and Rosmah's spending more thoroughly, instead of relying on reports about the couple from "pro-opposition news portals" which he said would undoubtedly skewer their news.
"This matter should not be made an issue. Tempo should investigate the truth of such news before writing any report," he told Utusan.
Tempo had also featured the Malaysian Crime Watch Task Force's (MyWatch) recent photographs, of what it claimed to be the couple's luxury watches.
MyWatch had alleged that the price of each of Rosmah's watches ranged from RM79, 200 for the Hublot BlackBerry Black Magic 114, to RM486, 000 for the Richard Mille Lady  RM 007 Diamond Cruncher.
Tempo drew comparisons between the watches and Najib's salary of about RM350, 000 per year.
"Najib and his family's lifestyle have courted the anger of Malaysians," said the article.
It also mentioned Rosmah's own remarks about her RM1, 200 hair style, which has been led to criticisms that she was out of touch with ordinary citizens struggling with the rising cost of living.
The magazine also reported on Najib's stepson, Riza Aziz, who bought an apartment in New York worth RM110 million in 2012 and a house in Beverly Hills, California, worth US$17.5 million (RM64 million) in cash, as reported by the New York Times.
The New York Times had carried a response from the Prime Minister's officer in relation to queries about Rosmah's spending, which said: “Neither any money spent on travel, nor any jewellery purchases, nor the alleged contents of any safes are unusual for a person of the prime minister’s position, responsibilities and legacy family assets.”
This led to a statement by Najib's four brothers, who took issue with speculations about the inheritance left by their father, Malaysia's second prime minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.
The Razak brothers said their father was known for his integrity and frugality, and denounced "anyone who taints his memory".
