Razaleigh-Azmin the way forward, says Ariff

Raub MP writes off Anwar and outlines how to ally with Mahathir in a move to new politics.
ariff-sabri_razaleigh_azmin-ali_600KUALA LUMPUR: Raub MP Ariff Sabri Aziz has spotlighted Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and PKR deputy president Azmin Ali as the key men for a new politics in Malaysia, effectively writing off Anwar Ibrahim.
Ariff said a Razaleigh-Anwar alliance as proposed by Zaid Ibrahim last week was unworkable as long as Anwar was in jail. Furthermore, Dr Mahathir Mohamad would not be able to overcome his disdain of his former deputy.
The real troika or triumvirate to oust Najib and free Anwar could only be Mahathir-Razaleigh and Azmin, although Azmin would need help to remain as the Selangor menteri besar in the face of a possible PAS-Umno alliance.
“Dr. Mahathir and Razaleigh’s interest is in saving Malaysia. Azmin’s interest in the nearest future is in being part of this politics to salvage the country and in saving himself, too,” Ariff said.
He urged Dr Mahathir and Tengku Razaleigh to engage with each other, and effectively sidelined Anwar Ibrahim. “For now let Anwar sleep with the mosquitoes at the Sg. Buloh resort. Anwar’s only would-be savior is Tengku Razaleigh if he ever were to become Prime Minister.”
Ariff said Dr Mahathir had no one else on his side in his campaign to oust Najib Razak as Umno president and prime minister. If deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin was moved up, he would inherit a government that would crumble and lose the support of Sabah and Sarawak.
Tengku Razaleigh, however, commanded respect from both sides of the aisle, Ariff said. He had remained aloof of mainstream politics and was not tarnished by negative perceptions of Umno. “I am not trying to be an apple polisher here (I am from DAP) but as it stands at the moment, half of TRH’s mind is worth more than the entire fleet of the Minister and deputy ministers in the finance ministry now,” he said.
Ariff dismissed Anwar as a key player, as long as he was imprisoned. The project to oust Najib could only succeed through those with considerable influence and resources: the only people meeting those criteria at present were Mahathir, Tengku Razaleigh and Azmin, he said.
Ariff set out a four-point plan for a new political framework.
First, elect a Malay leader who has the confidence and belief of all parties.
Second, this Malay leadership must be clean and committed to this new brand of politics.
Third, make Malaysian politics inclusive, with the non-Malays kept in the loop regarding all new political arrangements.
Fourth, the interests of the people of Sabah and Sarawak must be acknowledged and implemented.
In addition, he reminded all political parties that “there is no place for exclusive politics, be it based on religion race, or class”.
The new politics would be one led by Malays, Ariff said. “Whether we like it or not, the government must be led by the Malays, with more Malays in the national leadership than non-Malays. The non-Malay political parties accept this fact, and also believe that the country will be a peaceful one if Malay political power is retained,” Ariff said.
“But let the Malay leaders give fair, just, honest and efficient treatment. Nobody wants somebody who only passed Standard 6 to become our PM,” he sharply added (in an ambiguously worded sentence that might be miscontrued as a rebuke to the ulama-led PAS).
Whether the new government liked it or not, the Chinese voice would always be the DAP. The new government must include the DAP. It was important that PAS also had a role, besides representing religious people.
Ariff remained dismissive of the Islamist party’s plans to enforce hudud criminal penalties. “They can shout till the cows come home that hudud is of Allah. But there will be 1001 reasons why their screams will remain anything but dreams,” he said.

  1. Raub MP Ariff Sabri Aziz is right Malaysia must be led by Malays because Malays & Muslims are 65% of the population.
In fact I would like 3 of the top most important post to be held by Malays. Prime Minister, Deputy PM & Defence Minister be held by Malays or Muslims who becomes a Malay.
The Malaysian Chinese has accepted this fact for a very long time that Malaysia
has to be led by Malays. Whenever UMNO General Assembly starts & the anti Chinese rhetoric starts, they are kicking a dead horse because Malaysian
Chinese because of declining population are politically irrevelant. Malaysian
Chinese have lost the economic dominance as the Malays now controls the banks, sugar, flour & all the car agencies.
Good for the MP of Raub to come out & say Malay race must be the political controller of the country.
In fact maybe he could be a minister as well in the new cabinet.
