The mobile court unit which was established in Sabah in 2007 is the best way to tackle late registration of births in rural and interior parts of the state, says a PKR lawmaker.
Darell Leiking, the Penampang MP, said that the mobile court unit had been highly successful, as it was reported that some 95% of late registration of birth cases by villagers in the deep parts of Sabah were solved through the outfit.
"This only serves to confirm to us that the mobile court unit is competent and efficient in meeting the responsibility entrusted on it while at the same time, is highly effective in ensuring that our state's sovereignty and security remained intact," he said in a statement.
Darell said that the mobile court unit had also exposed several cases of illegals attempting to secure citizenship as it required applicants to go through a face-to-face interview with a judge and several witnesses.
The Sabahan lawmaker was commenting on the proposal by Sukau assemblyman Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman, who said that the Sabah Birth and Death Registration Ordinance 1951 should be amended so that the National Registration Department (NRD) and district officers would be authorised to approve the late registration of birth certificates in the interiors.
Saddi said that many people in the interiors had been deprived of government facilities and assistance due to the absence of the birth certificates and MyKad, adding that this was partly due to high transportation and management costs which many villagers could not afford to bear.
Instead of amending the law, Darell said Saddi should emulate what Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Moktar had done for his constituents.
"Bung travelled together with Tan Sri Richard Malanjum to Kampung Inarad for the late registration of birth certificate exercise for some 136 villagers," he added.
