The shockingly bad general knowledge of undergrads…

Some think Thailand is located in the south of Malaysia while others think racism is what the war in Syria is all about.
knowledge_600KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian students are dismally lacking when it comes to general knowledge, to the point of being totally oblivious as to even which country lies south of Malaysia.
Students from Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) were asked a series of questions in a recent interview by Free Malaysia Today, the questions of which ranged from basic geography to history.
While some were spot on about Singapore being the country in question, too many got it wrong, with a disconcertingly large number thinking it was Thailand.
“Capital of Penang…capital?” asked one student sheepishly, not even knowing what the definition of “capital” was. He did not go any further.
“Butterworth,” offered another student confidently but wrongly.
The duration of the King’s term (five years) was another question that stumped some students, with most declining to even venture an answer, saying “Pass” to get out of their predicament as soon as possible. The braver ones answered ten years or four. Fail.
Another question that many got wrong was the date of the establishment of the Malaysian federation. One student confidently answered “31st August 1957”. Others got the date about six years too early, answering 16th September 1957.
When given a list of four countries – New Zealand, United States, China and Japan – and asked which belonged to the Commonwealth, students mostly answered Japan or China, with only a handful answering New Zealand.
“The lines that run parallel to the equator are…the lines of longitude, is not my wrong (sic)” said one student, who not only got the answer terribly wrong but displayed a rather sad use of the English language to boot. The student was in good company however because many others were totally perplexed too.
One student thought the normal body temperature of a human being was between 25 to 28 degrees Celsius – our only hope is that this student is not studying for a medical degree.
Questions on more current events were thankfully answered a little more on the mark. For instance, when quizzed about where the recently downed airplane MH17 was en route from, most answered correctly with Amsterdam, with one saying that it was Russia.
Students were less informed however about the trouble in Syria. When asked about the current conflicts in the Middle East, particularly Syria, some correctly said that it was centred around the Islamic State (IS) , but many others said that it was a war over petroleum, or poverty.
“Racism,” answered one student, in a jaw-dropping moment.
