Zunar to face 9 sedition charges, needs bail money

Cartoonist needs to raise about RM45,000

Political cartoonist Zunar will be charged with nine counts under the Sedition Act tomorrow, and has appealed for help to raise the bail, which could be as much as RM45,000.
The nine charges relate to postings he made on Twitter last month regarding the Federal Court judgement in the Anwar Ibrahim case.

His lawyer Latheefa Koya estimated the total bail needed at RM45,000 based on the maximum RM5,000 on each charge, failing which Zunar would be sent to prison until his trial.
The Guardian reported Zunar’s arrest:
Zunar, 52, had suggested in a Twitter post that Malaysia’s judiciary – whose independence has been questioned before in political cases – had bowed to the country’s authoritarian regime”.

"Those in the black robes were proud when passing sentence. The rewards from their political masters must be lucrative,” the tweet had said.
Zunar has courted the attention of authorities in the past through his cartoons, which often take aim at Najib, his notoriously spendthrift wife Rosmah Mansor, and contentious issues such as Anwar’s sodomy trial.
» Guardian report
Human Rights Watch said Najib’s government was “turning peaceful criticism into a criminal act that threatens the state.”
“The arrest of cartoonist Zunar on sedition charges would be laughable except the police inspector general and the Malaysian ‘twitter police’ apparently don’t have a sense of humour,” it said.
