GLOOM IN NAJIB CAMP: Umno majority at Rompin SLASHED

GLOOM IN NAJIB CAMP: Umno majority at Rompin SLASHED
BN looks set to retain the Rompin parliamentary constituency as vote-counting for the by-election there today enters the last round.
According to unofficial figures released by Bernama, BN has now secured 23,627 votes compared to PAS which received 14,871 votes - a majority of 8,756 votes.
With the unofficial count almost completed, BN majority has been significantly slashed.
BN won the seat in 2013 with a 15,114 majority.
PAS' Nazri Ahmad faces an uphill challenge against Umno veteran Hasan Arifin who was the former Pahang deputy menteri besar.
The Rompin by-election was triggered after incumbent Jamaluddin Jarjis perished in a helicopter accident.
Jamaluddin won the parliamentary seat - which is adjacent to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's Pekan - with a 15,114 vote-majority in 2013.
Two issues, the Goods and Services Tax and hudud, dominated throughout the by-election's campaign.
BN is not only looking to retain its stronghold but also to defend its majority amid heavy criticism against Najib's leadership including by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad. - M'kini
