MALAY CULTURE OR NAJIB-ROSMAH SLEIGHT OF HAND? PM's aide insists son-in-law paid for everything

MALAY CULTURE OR NAJIB-ROSMAH SLEIGHT OF HAND? PM's aide insists son-in-law paid for everything
Malay culture dictates that the groom will bear the cost of the wedding for the bride's family as well, said an aide to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
"Thus if the kenduri is being held on the groom's side, obviously it is the groom's side that will bear the cost.
"Even if it means bearing the cost of the bride's entourage, it shows that the groom is responsible and shows efforts to accommodate the bride's family," the premier's aide Rizal Mansor told Malaysiakini.
Rizal was responding to an article by former NSTP group editor A Kadir Jasin yesterday, who questioned whether it was appropriate for Najib's son-in-law Daniyar Kessikbayev to foot the wedding cost.
Kadir argued that this was in view of the fact that the wedding invitation for the wedding receptions in Malaysia was sent out by Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor.
The former newsman's article was in response to Rizal's revelation that the costs of all three wedding reception - at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Pekan and Almaty, Kazakhstan - were borne by Daniyar.
Don't fray family ties
Rizal said that the question of the premier receiving any form of sponsorship does not arise, as this was merely a cultural matter.
"In this case, it seems that Kadir is a Malay who is not well-versed with (our) culture," he said.
On Kadir's allegation that Najib could be exposed to blackmail, Rizal (right) said that this was a mala fide allegation in view of the fact that Daniyar is now part of the premier's family.
"The speculation made by Kadir is designed to create suspicion between the couple. This is a nasty and spiteful act. This is highly unacceptable in Malay culture.
"Kadir must understand Malay culture and not show such ill-will," he said.
Kadir's factual mistake
The wedding receptions mostly escaped public scrutiny until former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad claimed during a speaking engagement that rumours were RM3 million were spent on flowers for the Kuala Lumpur leg.
Mahathir, who dubbed the wedding as the "wedding of the century", also alleged that 300 people were part of the Najib's entourage for the Kazakhstan leg.
Rizal also criticised Kadir for making a factual mistake in his article, claiming that the wedding reception in Kazakhstan took place in Astana instead of Almaty.
"Kadir needs to be careful of what he writes and be sure of his facts. It is embarassing considering that he is a former senior journalist and editor in charge of a media organisation.
"If this is how he writes, I can deduce that the information he has been using is baseless," said Rizal. - M'kini
