ONE 'SANDIWARA' ENDS, ANOTHER BEGINS: Cops finish 'cross' protest probe, over to AG
The police have wrapped up investigations into the Taman Medan church protest, and will submit the investigation papers to the Attorney-General's Chambers soon.
Selangor police chief Abu Samah Mat said it will then be up to the AGC to decide if the protesters would be charged with sedition.
"We have completed (the probe). We sent the investigation papers to the Bukit Aman legal department today, and they will examine it.
"InsyaAllah (God willing) if everything is ok we will submit the papers to the AG's chambers in one or two days.
"Currently (the case) is classified under the Peaceful Assembly Act and the Penal Code for trespassing. [...] If they find there is enough evidence (for a sedition charge) then they will decide," he told Malaysiakini.
On April 19, some 50 protesters gathered outside a church in Taman Medan, demanding that its cross be removed from a high vantage point as it was considered disturbing to Muslims.
Among the protesters was inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar's brother, Abdullah, who was grilled by the police for three hours in the days after the protest.
Abdullah, who is also the Taman Lindungan Jaya Umno branch chief, had previously defended his presence at the protest, claiming that he was there to mediate the conflict.
The protest has drawn widespread condemnation from various quarters. - M'kini
