KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today claimed that Malaysian Muslims have dug themselves into a moral quandary due to their allegedly distorted interpretation of the Quran, creating misguided individuals such as child porn convict Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin.

The former prime minister claimed that Muslims tended to selectively quote Quranic verses without considering the context in which the verses were framed, twisting the true teachings of Islam and leading to a dearth of great Islamic scholars

“We had a lot of scientists and mathematicians during Islam’s glory days,” Dr Mahathir (said)..

“Now we have a mathematician who downloads 30,000 child pornography videos because we don’t follow the Quran anymore,” he added.

According to British media last week, Nur Fitri, a maths scholar on a MARA scholarship at Imperial College London, was found to be in possession of over 30,000 videos and photographs of child pornography that London’s Metropolitan Police have described as “some of the most extreme” materials they have ever seen.

The Met has said in a statement on its website that Nur Fitri was sentenced to five years’ jail on April 30 for 13 offences of possessing and making indecent photographs and videos of children, as well as intent to distribute the materials.

The case sparked further outrage in Malaysia after MARA council member Nazir Hussin Akhtar Hussin reportedly said yesterday that they want to offer Nur Fitri a “second chance”, describing the 23-year-old as a “smart” student who can be an “asset” to the country.

MARA resent today to the media its May 2 statement that said ..Nazir’s remarks did not represent the council’s official stand, but refused to state if it will indeed allow Nur Fitri to continue his studies locally.

Dr Mahathir lamented today that part of the problem is the proliferation of people who hold a “BA in Islamic teachings”, whom he accused of routinely ignoring calls for a rational debate on Islam by those who do not possess Islamic credentials nor speak Arabic.

Dr Mahathir said ignorance towards true Islamic values is amplified by the focus on only “certain rituals” in Islamic education in schools instead of “Ad-din” or the understanding of their faith.

“These people only gather with their kind and don’t let others join them. They like to speak to children as they don’t like to be questioned. They want to speak and want people to follow,” he said.
