Rats abound but DBKL into handbags and couches instead

Instead of setting records for the largest bag and longest couch, how about ridding the city of rats and aiming for cleaner toilets, Lim Lip Eng suggests.

KUALA LUMPUR: Instead of pouring so much resources into making the world’s largest bag and longest couch, MP for Segambut Lim Lip Eng has said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) should instead be working towards ridding the city of rats and ensuring public toilets were clean for all and sundry.
“How nice it would be if DBKL showed the same level of excitement in its efforts to create a record for the cleanest toilets or the nicest parks in the Malaysian Book of Records or the Guinness World Records?
“Or perhaps to have a competition and give a prize to those who manage to catch the most rats from store alleys or manage to collect the most trash from the Klang River.”
He made this comment in reference to a recent announcement in Malaysiakini that the city council was embarking on a creative recycling campaign by building the world’s largest handbag and longest couch for recyclable materials.
Condemning the campaign as “wasteful” and “nonsensical”, Lim said, “Why do they have to waste time, money and manpower to create something that will not benefit the people?”
It was reported by Bernama that the campaign would require 5,000 people and 10,000 used T-shirts for the handbag alone and a further 1,000 people and 280 metres of denim for the couch.
“Efforts to create the world’s largest handbag and the world’s longest couch makes it seem like DBKL has nothing better to do that will benefit the city folk,” he said, expressing his sincere hope that Kuala Lumpur mayor Ahmad Phesal Talib would hatch a better plan at leaving behind a “good legacy” before his term was up in July this year.
