Schools should only hire security guards from registered companies to avoid inadvertently inviting criminals to their premises.
Malaysian Consumer Protection and Welfare Board (LPKPM) president, Datuk Seri Dr Shaharuddin Awang Yahya said registered companies ensured quality and normally provided guards who were screened by the police.
"This is unlike the unregistered companies, which, despite offering lower rates, do not select workers via the record issued by the police. Some conduct business by using the licences of registered companies," he said when contacted by Bernama, yesterday.

Shaharuddin was commenting on media reports yesterday that two security guards of a primary school were detained by police on suspicion of being involved in several housebreaking cases in the Klang Valley.
Shahrudin also rapped the action of some schools which utilised the open recruitment of security guards without referring to the authorities.
He said, a wrong choice could contribute to untoward incidents to the pupils, as they (security guards) could easily get to know the personalities and identities of their would be victims.
"We do not want the guards to betray us by outraging the modesty of a pupil, commit rape or murder," he said.
Meanwhile, Security Services Association of Malaysia (PPKKM) president Datuk Seri Mustapa Ali said, currently, 761 security firms were registered with the Home Ministry (KDN).
Of the total, there are 203,000 local security guards and 40,000 Nepalese who are ex-police or army in their home country and registered for the job.
In line with the Private Agency Act 1971 under KDN, among others, a security guard must be a permanent citizen, aged from 18 years to 60 years, has no criminal record and has a clean career record, especially for a soldier or policeman.
"Before they are hired, the security guards undergo health checks, including mental test conducted by the police and undergo a six-day course at a police training centre nationwide.
"In addition, the starting pay of RM475 a month paid by the security firm can be claimed via the Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Bhd," he said.
Mustapa said KDN with the cooperation of PPKKM also imposed a compulsory condition for the security firms to undergo a management course organised by the ministry.
"Shareholders and company directors must undergo the two-day management course, otherwise their licences cannot be renewed," he said. – Bernama
