KUALA LUMPUR - Umno Vice-President Shafie Apdal has called for serious action to be taken in the case of the reported purchase of land from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) by Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) so that its depositors can feel reassured that funds lodged with the latter are safe and guaranteed.
“Even before this (purchase), I have felt that the 1MDB issue should be given serious attention and all questions arising should be answered in detail,” said Shafie who was among the 30-odd divisional chiefs who was not present at a meeting called recently by party president and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
“The 1MDB issue has been not only of concern to me but the people in general.”
The issue (1MDB), added Shafie who is also Federal Minister of Rural and Regional Development, has now become even more serious with the reported purchase of land by a body entrusted with public funds.
He warned that if the land purchase was not handled carefully, the credibility of the government would continue to be questioned.
Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed, among others, has also publicly queried TH’s RM188.5 million land purchase from 1MDB at this juncture especially as there were other investment opportunities for the former in managing monies collected from would-be pilgrims.
1MDB, wholly owned by the Ministry of Finance and touted as a strategic investment arm, chalked up debts up RM42 billion within five years and is currently being vetted by the PAC and Auditor-General. - FMT
