Women gangsters add to crime statistics

Women make up 12% of gangs, commit 10% of crimes, says crime prevention organisation chief.
WOMEN GANGSTERMALACCA: Far from being a mere adornment on the arms of the gangsters, the women gangsters in the country are fast establishing a notorious name for themselves.
Authorities are saying that the women gangsters make up about 12% of the current gang strength and account for about 10% of the crime.
These women gangsters were involved in about 10% of assault, robbery, providing “protection” and drug-related crimes reported in the country last year, said United Malaysia Crime Prevention Organisation chairman A. Balakrishnan.
“Gangs like 36, 21, 24, 555, 303, 04, 08 and Satu Hati have their women leaders and they have been recruiting more schoolgirls,” said Balakrishnan after meeting with M.S. Mahadevan who is the chairman of Malacca’s Private Sector, Human Resource and NGOs Committee.
According to Mahadevan, gangs like 36, 04 and the Sorna Sisters from Johor BRU were recruiting members in the state.
“I have seen videos of women gangs in action with some of the footages taken in Malacca.”
Malacca is working with police and women-based NGOs to act against the protection racket and violence against schoolgirls, said Mahadevan.
Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation has also warned against the violent schoolgirl gangsters.
Vice-chairman Lee Lam Thye said they were very concerned about the increasing gangster activity in the country and in schools.
We had already warned against women gangsters providing “protection” in schools and recruiting members, said Lee.
The recent cases of bullying and violent behaviour of students in both the boys’ and girls’ schools should be taken very seriously, he added
