The DAP today suggested that an upcoming international anti-corruption conference, featuring Datuk Seri Najib Razak, include a sub-theme relating to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
The party's parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said the debt-ridden state investment firm would be a "prefect" case study as to why the theme of the International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC)  – "Ending Impunity:
People, Integrity and Action” – is so difficult to achieve.
"In fact, the 16th IACC should have a sub-theme of 'The Mother of all Financial Scandals in Malaysia – the RM42 billion 1MDB Scandal'," he said in a statement today.
"As the IACC never had and will never again have such an unprecedented opportunity in the future, where a prime minister who is personally and directly involved in a financial scandal which is snowballing into a great national and international disaster, presenting direct counter case study of how necessary but impossible to achieve the conference theme is," he added.
The conference, to be held in September, will be jointly hosted by Putrajaya, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and Transparency International Malaysia.
Najib is to speak at the event which is expected to draw 800-2,000 participants from around the world, according to online information about the event.
On the conference website, the event is described as "the world's premier global forum" for governments, civil society and the private sector to tackle corruption.
Lim today proposed that the four key authority figures heading a special task force that is investigating claims that Najib had billions transferred from state-owned funds into his personal accounts, should also be included in the list of speakers at the conference.
The four are Bank Negara governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, MACC head Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed and Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail.
"They should appear before the IACC sessions to impart their experience and expertise to an international conference as they must be the only outfit in the world of subordinate officers investigating the Number One authority in government and nation, the Prime Minister," Lim said.
"Who believes that the four subordinates to Najib will be able to freely, independently and professionally carry out their investigation of the prime minister, even proposing that he should be removed and charged in court on corruption charges?"
He said he had no doubt that if a vote is put to the IACC, whether participants would approve of such an arrangement, the answer would be a decisive and unanimous "no".
"I hope the Malaysian authorities will not back out of this global anti-corruption conference in Putrajaya with the Prime Minister as a rare guest speaker presenting his unique insights and experience on the conference theme," the veteran DAP leader added.
Yesterday, Lim said the conference should be cancelled as Malaysia is under scrutiny over 1MDB and allegations of embezzlement involving the prime minister.
He said that Malaysia could not be considered an example in fighting corruption, and that going ahead with the conference would shame Malaysians further.
