Salleh: Interim report by Auditor-General shows money has not disappeared as Mahathir alleged
(Free Malaysia Today) – Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been urged to apologise in the spirit of the holy month of Ramadan for stating that 1Malaysia Development Bhd had lost RM42 billion.
Sabah Umno deputy chairman Salleh Said Keruak pointed out in a blog article that “in fact, the term Dr Mahathir used was ‘disappeared into thin air’ whereas an interim report by the Auditor-General had shown that the money had not disappeared.
Salleh accused Dr Mahathir of creating a “serious injustice” against the prime minister, Najib Razak and the nation for making an incorrect allegation.
“We can give Dr Mahathir the benefit of the doubt and assume that he is unable to understand financial reports and that he accused Najib not out of malicious reasons but due to this inability,” Salleh said.
Whatever his reasons for the attack, Dr Mahathir had created public uneasiness, allowing foreign media to use his allegation to create instability, Salleh said.
Dr Mahathir has conducted a campaign of criticism against Najib in recent months over the dubious financial transactions and investments by 1MDB and has publicly urged Najib to step down as prime minister and Umno president.
