Brake failure on LRT trains due to design issue, says Rapid Rail

Two brake failure incidents disrupted service on the LRT Kelana Jaya line today. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, July 22, 2015.Two brake failure incidents disrupted service on the LRT Kelana Jaya line today. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, July 22, 2015.A "design issue" has been blamed for the two brake failure incidents which disrupted service of the Kelana Jaya light rail transit (LRT) four-car trains today.
Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd said the brake failure problem had been highlighted since February and today's incidents were a continuation of the same problem.
"We have asked train manufacturer, Bombardier, and Knorr Brake Company, to search for a solution to the problem which had been highlighted to them since early this year.
"While working for a long-term solution, our engineers have been attending to the brake callipers of the existing 35 four-car trains and replacing the brake seals," Rapid Rail said in a statement.
It said so far, some 40% of the 560 units of brake callipers have been fitted with new brake seals.
"This is, however, only a containment measure while Bombardier and Knorr Brake Company come out with a permanent solution" it said.
Rapid Rail, in apologising to commuters for the inconvenience caused by the two incidents today, said the problem had resulted in a lower number of serviceable trains on a number of occasions over the last few months.
It said that checks had been conducted on the brake systems of the Kelana Jaya Line LRT trains to mitigate the problem.
"Additional roving technicians are also being deployed on the ground to ensure swift response in the event of service interruption.
"Being a fail-safe system, any brake failure will result in the train stopping and this had resulted in service interruption and caused inconvenience to the customers as the train would need to be rescued and sent to the nearest stabling track," the statement said.
Rapid Rail assured commuters that their safety would never be compromised.
The first brake failure incident today occurred during rush hour, resulting in many office workers getting to work late.
It involved a Gombak-bound train at Setiawangsa station. Service was disrupted from  8.19am to 8.45am.
The second incident involved another Gombak-bound train near Universiti station at 12.18pm. A total of 53 passengers were transferred to a rescue train.
Service resumed at 12.35pm on an alternate track.
"We noted that there were sparks of fire resulting from the brake dragging issue. The liquid discharged due to leakage will cause excessive smoke when hitting the hot iron track.
"It should be noted that any occurrence of fire is not immediate. The train would have stopped and a rescue team would be immediately dispatched to commence efforts to evacuate the passengers.
"In today’s incident, all passengers were already transferred to the rescue train when the brief fire occurred. Both fires were put out by Rapid Rail rescue team members by using fire extinguishers in the trains," the statement said.
