DPM: No one knows about 1MDB except Najib

Muhyiddin Yassin had to read The Edge to understand what was going on at 1MDB.

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin went public on Sunday night on his differences with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak on the scandal-ridden 1MDB. He was addressing a gathering at the Umno Cheras division’s annual general meeting in an hour-long closing speech. “If members attack Mahathir on 1MDB, it will only increase his popularity and the party will get weaker,” he warned.
“Only Najib can explain about 1MDB. This is a sovereign debt fund involving billions of ringgit and unusually high interest rates which total even more than annual state budgets.”
He conceded that although he was the number two in the government, he was in the dark on the troubled government-owned strategic investment and development company. “I had to rely on The Edge and ask economists and businessmen to better understand the company.”
“I was ticked off by Cabinet members when I referred to The Edge. They said the reports were not accurate. When I asked them what was accurate, they couldn’t answer.”
“No one in the Cabinet knows about 1MDB including Second Finance Minister Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah and Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan,” he resumed in adding that the party should not create enmity with the people. “Each time they tried to explain 1MDB, they were debunked. The public are not stupid. Our Facebook accounts carry nothing but criticisms from the people.”
When the Wall Street Journal appeared on Friday 3 July, alleging that nearly USD700 million entered Najib’s accounts, Muhyiddin sent the Prime Minister a text message urging him to explain as the matter was serious. “He replied that he had many questions unanswered.”
The Deputy Prime Minister remained undeterred and reminded his boss every week on the WSJ report. “Only the Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement although I advised that he should explain himself.”
He disclosed that he had advised the Prime Minister to quit as the Chairman of the 1MDB Advisory Board, to avoid the public perception that he was involved, but his plea fell on deaf ears. “The Interim Report and the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Report should be made available to the public. Let the media report them. I haven’t read the reports.”
Muhyiddin stressed that he had been vocal in the Cabinet and the Umno Supreme Council on 1MDB, in fact being the first Minister to speak up on the scandal. “I have not said many things in public because the party is weak. I don’t want to create the impression that the Prime Minister and I are at loggerheads or that I want to oust him from the premiership and seize power.”
He expressed the hope that the special Task Force investigating the 1MDB scandal will find the “culprits” as soon as possible and punish them. “The sooner that this is done, the better it would be for the party and the government. There must be closure, a final resolution.”
Muhyiddin hastened to add that his criticisms of how the government was handling the 1MDB controversy were not an attempt at seizing power. “I just want the public to be satisfied. If we went to the polls today, and our popular votes dropped 2 per cent, we would lose. There’s a negative perception about the party. We no longer have the wow factor.”
“The people will not judge us by the great things the party did in the past but by what’s happening now. The GST, for example, is burdening the people because the prices of even non-GST items have increased.”
