History books should include Sarawak’s independence day

Sarawakians must also reject any movement or organisation that wants the state to pull out from Malaysia as it could lead to serious consequences

MIRI: Sarawak gaining independence from the British on July 22, 1963 should be included in the history textbooks to enable a thorough understanding of history of the state.
Bintulu Member of Parliament Tiong King Sing said the date was factual history when Sarawak was officially granted self-government on July 22, 1963 as it was Sarawak’s independence from the British and should be made aware to the present generation.
“However the date should be for remembrance only for the younger generation to understand state history,” he said in a statement issued from Bintulu here today.
Tiong said if there was too much emphasis on the Sarawak independence date then it could disrupt the strong bond between Sarawak and the peninsula.
He quoted former Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman’s statement that “when the Borneo territories become part of Malaysia, they will cease to be a colony of Britain and they will not be a colony of Malaysia-I thought I had made it clear-they will be partners of equal status.”
Thus, Tiong urged fellow Sarawakians to think analytically and weigh wisely any issues that could harm the nation’s unity.
Tiong said, as a Sarawakian he agreed that the people should strive for more autonomy and rights for Sarawakians from the federal government. “If I am being selfish, of course I would agree to demand autonomy over all the natural resources, however, we should look at it from a long term perspective and make the right demand,” he said.
He said for example the right demand should be pushing to give more Sarawakians to hold key ministerial positions at the federal government such as Home Affairs Ministry, Defence Ministry and the same time, more opportunities for Sarawakians to play a vital role in government linked companies (GLCs).
He advised Sarawakians to reject any movement or organisation that wanted Sarawak to pull out from Malaysia as it could lead to serious consequences, especially the national unity.
