KUALA LUMPUR: DAP lawmaker Tony Pua today unequivocally denied having met former PetroSaudi International employee Xavier Andre Justo, currently being detained by Thai Police.
At a press conference in the DAP headquarters in Jalan Yew, Pua said, “I’ve answered it many times. No. I’ve never seen Lester (Melanyi) in my life. I’ve never heard of Justo until the news broke out that he was arrested in Bangkok.”
Pua claimed that the only individual he had met was Clare Rewcastle-Brown, the founder and editor of the Sarawak Report, and that all documents he obtained from her were those that were already posted on the website.
The Petaling Jaya Utara MP also held up his passport to the press where his showed that the only entry stamp into Singapore was on March 19, well after all the alleged fabricated “documents” pertaining to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) had been exposed.
In a video confession, Lester Melanyi, the former editor of the Sarawak Tribune implied that Pua had met with Justo in Singapore regarding the fabricated documents.
Referring to recent allegations that his wife had RM3 million stashed away overseas under her name, Pua brushed it aside, saying it was a tactic to change the narrative around 1MDB, especially after the arrest of Justo and to shift attention to the whistleblowers instead of the “criminals.”
He said that he along with others in DAP would continue to ask probing questions to the government and the prime minister, as well as former 1MDB CEO Shahrol Halmi and its current Group Executive Director Arul Kanda Kandasamy, at the Public Accounts Committee meeting in Parliament on August 4.
“At the same time we will continue to debunk whatever dirt that they will pour on us,” he said regarding the NGO led by Ramesh Rao who made the recent allegations about his wife’s wealth and assets abroad.
“All this dirt is coming from the least credible of the lot. The fact that this BN (Barisan Nasional) affiliated NGO has to pay money to a bankrupt to make a video confession (Lester) and this morning’s press conference was by the same people who are also bankrupts,” Pua said.
He also confirmed that Lester’s bankrupt status will not stop him from pursuing a legal suit against him, as it was not about the money, but about the truth.
“I can still sue him, it’s just that he can’t pay me,” quipped Pua.
