IGP harming country’s reputation by sitting on task force

PAS’s Mahfuz Omar says the IGP’s call to probe who leaked information to WSJ is casting more doubt on his ability to be impartial in the probe on 1MDB.

PETALING JAYA: The call by the Inspector-General of Police to investigate who leaked damaging information to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), is causing onlookers to distrust the ability of Khalid Abu Bakar in being impartial when investigating the controversy regarding 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), said PAS’s Mahfuz Omar.
“The IGP’s statement that the police will investigate whoever has leaked the information and how WSJ had obtained it, does not help to rescue our country’s reputation,” the MP for Pokok Sena was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini in an article in PAS’ official Facebook page today.
He said the integrity of the special task force, which was set up to investigate allegations of corruption within 1MDB, could only stay intact if Khalid Abu Bakar stepped down as a member and was relieved of his IGP’s post as well.
“To guarantee the integrity of the special task force and the country’s good name, I urge Khalid to be removed from the team, and to be relieved of his IGP post.”
He also said, “After the acting and drama that is being played out by them, where is the transparency in the investigations?”
Apart from the IGP, the task force is headed by Bank Negara Malaysia governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail, and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed.
The task force’s purpose is to probe the allegations made by WSJ regarding USD700 million of 1MDB funds that were deposited into the private bank accounts of Prime Minister Najib Razak.
