JPJ nabs 170 in Raya blitz on road offenders

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department has booked 170 motorists for various offences after inspection 1,030 vehicles on the first day of Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri which began on Saturday night.
JPJ director-general Ismail Ahmad said the integrated operation started at 12 midnight.
Seven drivers had to undergo urine tests conducted by the National Anti-Drug Agency for driving under the influence of drugs, 54 summonses were issued by the police while the Land Public Transport Commission booked two people during the operation.
“The operation was conducted to ensure safety on the roads during the festive season,” he told reporters at Batu toll plaza on the Duke Highway.
He said the operation was conducted simultaneously across the country and involved 1,800 JPJ staff in the states.
In BUKIT MERTAJAM, JPJ officers issued 123 summonses to errant motorcyclists. Penang JPJ director Hassan Yaacob said action was taken on 87 motorcycles, including one which was sealed.
He said the summonses were issued for various offences such as riding without a valid licence, and registration number plates which did not meet the specifications.
Hassan said JPJ and other agencies would carry out various programmes to reduce road accidents during the Aidilfitri celebration. JPJ stff would be posted every 30km along state roads and at highway rest areas. Buses would be inspected before they would be allowed to leave the depot or terminal.
In KUALA TERENGGANU, the state JPJ stepped up operations on motorcyclists an effort to reduce accidents involving motorcyclists and pillion riders.
Its director Abdul Rahman Emang Anyie said motorcyclists were the largest contributors to road accidents in the state.
