Law grad of ‘Saya Zahra’ video reduced to tears over attacks on family

Siti Azzahra Abd Razly, the face of the “Saya Zahra” #SayaSayangkanMalaysia (I am Zahra #I love Malaysia) campaign did not expect the video of her speaking about her financial struggles to go viral.
But what shocked the law graduate was the fallout from the video, with criticism levelled at her family as well.
"People were attacking my private life, saying Zahra is a whiner, attacking my family, saying they did not raise their child properly," the 23-year-old told The Malaysian Insider, admitting she cried when she read the comments.
Zahra became a hot topic on social media after a video of her speaking of her financial struggles despite being a graduate was uploaded by the Malay Economic Action Council (MTEM) on its Facebook page and shared online.
Her audience included Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Her appearance drew agreement but also criticism from those who felt she had yet to experience the real world when she complained about being unable to own a home after working for just two years.
Some said she was naive to think that working life would be easy, while others said her financial struggles were no different from what previous generations had to endure in order to own a home or pay off debts.
In response, the former Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Pontian and MRSM Taiping student said her critics did not get the point of her message.
"What I meant was, a house in Kuala Lumpur located near our workplace might cost RM500 to rent which I cannot afford.
"So I looked for cheaper accommodation but I have to share with eight people. Rental of between RM200 and RM250 per person is considered okay.
"I understand the majority of those who saw the video felt that I was complaining but they did not get the message behind the video," she said.
According to Zahra, her description of her situation coincided with the government's own 2014 Malaysian Socio-economic Report.
Additionally, some 25,000 Malaysians under the age of 35 were declared bankrupt in the last five years for failing to settle their car, housing and credit cards loans, according to the Insolvency Department’s records.
At the same time, wealth is concentrated in the hands of the already affluent as shown by figures on rising inequality in property and earnings in Malaysia, a joint study by Universiti Malaya (UM) and the Khazanah Research Institute found last year.
Zahra said the opportunity to speak in front of Muhyiddin had to be utilised fully to send the right message from the report to the country's senior leaders.
"In such an event, we cannot act according to emotion. We cannot throw him everything. So the narrative was to draw their attention to our message," said the oldest of three children.
She had also shared her happiness speaking in front of Muhyiddin with her parents who live in Batu Kawan, Penang.
"They said good, this is an opportunity to do something for our race," she said.
Some of the criticism she received were on her comment about marrying a rich man as one of the ways to get out of poverty.
“Maybe I need to marry a rich man to get out of this economic crisis. It may sound funny but it's reality. Study so much but in the end, we are struggling to make ends meet," she said in the video.
Zahra said the remark was made in jest, and some in the audience could be heard laughing in response.
"I was joking because the mood at that time was quite tense, at least that would make people will laugh a little.”
Zahra also said it was true she still used her father's MyVi and gave him RM500 every month in appreciation for letting her use the vehicle.
"People think that I wanted a car immediately after graduation. It's not true. It's my dad's car and I pay him as a form of appreciation.
"Now that I am using his car, he uses a motorbike. Before I used his car, I took public transport. I took the LRT, monorail and KTM (commuter train). I balik kampung (return to my hometown) by train.”
She thanked those who shared the Saya Zahra video on their Facebook, saying: "I want to thank them because they are my inspiration, giving me advice."

  1. Dear Zahra, don't worry. I can assure you you're not alone. Unfoetunately, Malaysia is filled with racists and illiterate, who is willing to sacrifice their whole family and generation just for the sake of maintaining the Malay rules. They have forgotten what NEP is about and for. That is the reason why we can get cow-gate scandals, Mara money being stolen, tabung haji funds being misused etc. These racists are not doing and thinking for their future generation. These are pathetic idi**s and they are the sole cause of corruption. Their action encourages corruption and after 50+ years of non competition, BN has become so arrogant that it felt they didn't have to represent their constituency. As long as they get into the good books of the PM, they can do anything they like. Can't blame them cos if their boss is whacking, they'll feel they have lost out if the don't take! So, I hope you can be the next generation in Malaysia to eradicate these illiterates! Good luck!
