LET NAJIB & CABINET TRY: Can M'sians SURVIVE on RM6 a day for five days?
GEORGETOWN - A challenge is in store for those who wish to prove that they can survive on RM6 per day for five days.
The challenge was organised by Suaram Penang, dubbed the “Poverty Line Challenge” in conjunction with Local Democracy Festival 2015.
The challenge would begin on July 30 and end on Aug 3 and participants were free to lead their everyday lives as usual with the condition being that they could not spend more than RM30 in the five-day period on food and beverages.
Its spokesperson Lee Chung Lun said the challenge was now open to anyone willing to take part to be in the running to win three awards.
“Participants are also required to minimise the use of other expenses like transportation, telecommunications and leisure activities.
“Participants are required to write a report on their daily expenses, their feelings and experiences throughout the period and submit the report to the organiser by Aug 8,” he told a press conference at the Suaram office in Jalan Sungai Dua today.
Lee said that the objective of the joint programme by Suaram Penang and the Penang state government was to challenge participants to have a a taste at living poor besides testing the ability of participants to save money or cut down costs.
“The poverty line fixed by the government is RM763 per household in Malaysia and the purpose of this challenge is to educate the public on the difficulties faced by a household to survive only on a monthly income of RM763
“Participants will be in the running to win three awards — the Most Saving Award of RM300, the Best Involvement Award of RM300 and the Most Popular Awars of RM100,” he said.
The participant who spent the least amount on food and beverage in the five days would win the Most Saving Award while the participant who received the most “like” in the organiser’s Facebook page would win the Most Popular Award.
The Best Involvement Award would go to the participant who put in the most efforts in minimising all expenses including for transportation such as car pooling or taking public transportation and reducing the use of their mobile phone and data. - Therakyatpost
