Mahathir: My friends and I now targets

Former premier believes his supporters also affected by government action against The Edge.

KUALA LUMPUR: Dr Mahathir Mohamad believes he and his supporters are now also the targets of possible government action following the suspension of The Edge weekly and its sister paper Financial Daily.
Dr Mahathir has been at the forefront of intense public criticism of Najib Razak’s government and its handling of the affairs of 1Malaysia Development Bhd, and has urged Najib to resign as Umno president and prime minister.
He agreed the government action against the Edge should be condemned. “Of course, we have to censure,” he said to waiting reporters at Berjaya Times Square, where tycoon Vincent Tan hosted a glittering 90th birthday party in Dr Mahathir’s honour.
Dr Mahathir said: “The Edge and also all my friends are now the target. I don’t know why”, according to Star Online.
He did not state who he meant by his friends. However, among the guests present was a longtime associate A. Kadir Jasin, former group editor-in-chief of New Straits Times Press, who has written extensively and critically about 1MDB in his blog.
Kadir welcomed the announcement by the Edge that it would seek a judicial review of the home ministry’s suspension of its publishing licences. “This is the only way out,” he was quoted as saying, noting that newspapers and magazines which had been suspended in the past had never challenged the government’s action.
Besides Kadir, other Umno-linked bloggers have also criticised the Najib government and 1MDB.
