KUALA LUMPUR - Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will not attend a bipartisan lawmakers’ meeting in Parliament today to discuss the current controversy over 1 Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), his aide confirmed.
Several citizens groups yesterday lodged reports urging the police to prevent Dr Mahathir from attending today’s meeting, claiming his attendance would lead to a public disturbance.
“No,” Sufi Yusoff, the personal aide to Dr Mahathir, told Malay Mail Online when asked if the former prime minister will attend the event.
The four groups that lodged police reports in Penang yesterday alleged that Dr Mahathir’s presence would cause the same commotion that prompted authorities to cancel a dialogue on 1MDB at the Putra World Trade Centre last month.
The ostensibly bipartisan meeting of “progressive” MP was organised by DAP’s Lim Kit Siang to discuss Malaysia’ s future as a result of a Wall Street Journal article accusing the prime minister of receiving US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) from 1MDB. - Malay Mail
