Pekida’s action in Low Yat Plaza brawl regretful, says moderate Muslim group

Former diplomat Datuk Noor Farida Ariffin of the group of prominent Malays, or G25, today has slammed Malay rights group Pekida for taking part in the gathering outside the Low Yat Plaza, saying that the Muslim NGO has failed to uphold the sanctity of Ramadan.
She said Pekida's involvement in the gathering on Sunday in Kuala Lumpur that saw 200 people shouting derogatory and unsavoury remarks, only aggravated the situation and showcased their failure to respect the Muslim fasting month.
"It is sad that this incident has happened during the holy month of Ramadan. The involvement of Pekida, a Muslim NGO, had aggravated this ugly situation further.
Yesterday, authorities asked businesses at the popular mall to close early after the group started gathering outside the building to air their “dissatisfaction” over the Saturday brawl, where some youths and mobile phone salesmen were engaged in a brawl after their friend was nabbed for allegedly stealing a mobile phone from one of the outlets there.
Noor Farida said that the Malay and Chinese communities should condemn those involved in the brawl and apologise to the larger Malaysian community for the wrongs done by the bad elements in their respective communities.
She said the incident should also serve as a lesson to politicians to stop stoking racial sentiments and using race and religion for political gain.
According to her, bloggers from the Chinese and Malay communities were equally responsible for fanning the flames of racial tension and urged the police to investigate and charge them under the Sedition Act.
"It just shows how dangerous social media can be when used by irresponsible people to incite racial and religious hatred.
"The police should investigate these bloggers for offences under the Sedition Act and charge them under this Act."
It was reported earlier that Pekida president Jalaluddin Yusof, had said that the group would not hesitate to take action against its members if they were found to be involved in the brawl that took place in the vicinity of the Low Yat Plaza early today.
He said Pekida would conduct an internal investigation if there were complaints that members had taken part in the incident.
Early this morning, five people were injured when a group of 50 men barged into a restaurant near Low Yat Plaza and started attacking the patrons.
Among the injured were several journalists.
Last night, some 200 men who gathered in front of Low Yat Plaza led to the mall closing its doors earlier than usual.

  1. This is a very strange statement from a G25 member - slamming Pekida for merely failure to respect Muslim fasting month whilst suggesting Chinese bloggers to be charged. Hahaha...this is Malaysia. Its always the other way round. Criminals are let go whilst innocent rakyat suffer the blame. The act of pekida is clearly a show of real racism. The Chinese shop keepers were lucky the other keepers help. Otherwise, the Malays will feel supreme in that they can commit any crime they like, as long as they know racist NGOs. Where is the st**id police? Why is there no arrest? Why don't you suggest the police to arrest pelican members who are involved? What country is this? I must remind all Malaysians. Such act will not only affect non Muslims. It will also affect the Muslims. Look at what happened to the poor lady and her daughter at ukay perdana? These criminals must be arrested cos once they are finished with Chinese, they'll go after any opportunity. God bless the Malaysian.
