Shahbudin: Muhyiddin must tell Najib ‘time out’

Shahbudin makes new call for Najib to take leave so that 1MDB investigations can continue unimpeded.

KUALA LUMPUR:  Political analyst and blogger Shahbudin Husin has urged Muhyiddin Yassin to take the next step and persuade prime minister Najib Razak to go on leave so that investigations into the 1MDB financial scandal may proceed unimpeded.
Shahbudin lauded yesterday’s statement by Muhyiddin, in which the deputy prime minister had called for an investigation of claims that billions in 1MDB-linked funds had been deposited into bank accounts purportedly held by Najib.
He pointed out that Muhyiddin’s statement was unlike those of other Umno leaders who merely dismissed the claims in Thursday’s Wall Street Journal report.
Shahbudin highlighted the three main points that Muhyiddin had made: allegations against Najib should be investigated; the claims made about Najib were personal, and Najib should respond; and legal action should be taken against the Journal if the claims were untrue.
The analyst also saw significance in the Attorney-General’s announcement yesterday “just hours after Muhyiddin’s statement” that the government’s special task force had raided three companies and obtained further documents relating to the claims made in the Journal’s report.
On Thursday, the Journal published details of transactions between various companies and government agencies that eventually ended with a total of US$700 million being channelled in five deposits into accounts with AmBank’s private banking unit. The accounts were purportedly in Najib’s name.
Shahbudin said it was necessary for Muhyiddin to take a step further by proposing that Najib go on leave.
There would be difficulties for investigators from MACC, the police, Bank Negara and the Attorney-General’s Chambers to carry out their duties without any interference if Najib remained in office.
Shahbudin pointed out that all the relevant agencies were directly connected to Najib. As finance minister, he has political oversight over Bank Negara although it is an independent agency; as prime minister, the Attorney-General and the MACC also come under his purview.
“Only with Najib on leave can the investigation proceed fairly, smoothly and without interruption,” Shahbudin said.
He cited the examples of two senior Mara officials, Mohamad Lan Alani and Abdul Halim Abd Rahim who have been suspended from duty pending investigations into alleged property corruption, and the case of former Umno Youth leader and Melaka chief minister Abdul Rahim Tamby Chik.
He said the WSJ report, directly implicating Najib in the 1MDB scandal, made it appropriate to revisit the subject of Najib going on leave. Muhyiddin, as deputy to Najib, was the most appropriate person to do so.
Shahbudin ended his blog posting with the words: “Come on Muhyiddin, one more step!”
