Social media wanted Jeffrey in 40 per cent committee

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Opposition Chief Lajim Ukin, upset that Bingkor Assemblyman Jeffrey Kitingan was included in a 40 per cent committee that met with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak recently, appears to be unaware how the final cut was made.
The social media, coming to Jeffrey’s defence, has pointed out that it was the consensus among the people that the Bingkor Assemblyman should be included in the committee. “He has been widely credited for raising the issue that 40 per cent of the revenues collected in Sabah by the Federal Government should be returned to the state government.”
“For the first Public Forum on the 40 per cent issue at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Jeffrey was initially not invited,” said Evelyn-Gobile Koh on Facebook. “But Sabahans pushed for his inclusion through the social media.”
“That was an eye-opener. He was invited again for the second Forum and by consensus from the floor it was suggested that Jeffrey should be chairman of the committee.”
She was making the point that Lajim – “probably gagged by his political masters in Malaya” — never spoke up on the issue in the Sabah Assembly. “We have seen how Chief Minister Musa Aman and even Jeffrey’s own brother Joseph Pairin ganged up against him in the Assembly whenever he spoke up on the rights of the people.”
“They attacked him mercilessly.”
Former Sabah Chief Minister Yong Teck Lee described Jeffrey as “brilliant” for having discovered the 40 per cent anomaly. “Foreign Minister Anifah Aman had the courage to take it up all the way to the Prime Minister. He deserves our recognition too.”
Anifah was taking great risks in possibly offending Umno, and the Prime Minister, added Yong. “He might even lose his job over this claim and other Sabah rights. Both leaders, Jeffrey and Anifah, deserve the support of all Sabahans in the fight for our rights.”
Jeffrey, defending himself, cannot fathom how Lajim can say that the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) was making use of him. “In what way am I being used by Umno and BN? I am the one who first raised the issue and have spoken up on it ever since I was elected to the Assembly in 2013.”
He urged Lajim not to divide the Opposition further on the issue and called on him to work with both sides of the political divide in helping to bring home the 40 per cent for the Sabah Government.
Lajim in his latest statement on the issue declared that only a Pakatan Rakyat government in Putrajaya can help resolve the 40 per cent issue. “Jeffrey would fall for any Umno baits, especially if the bait is cleverly laced with emphasis on ‘state rights’ and ‘autonomy’.”
It doesn’t seem to matter to him that such baits come from the scandal-ridden Umno/BN which is lacking in integrity and is sinking, said Lajim. “He should not fall for the Umno wayang (play acting).”
