TAKES SCUM TO KNOW SCUM, MINISTER SAYS IN DEFENCE OF SARAWAK REPORT ACCUSER

Abdul Rahman Dahlan
(Malay Mail Online) – An Umno minister today maintained his position that claims against whistleblower site Sarawak Report (SR) of forging documents linking the prime minister to a multi-billion-ringgit financial scandal must be investigated, even if the credibility of the journalist who made the accusation was in question.
Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan said he may not be in a position to judge the character of Lester Melanyi — who levelled the accusations against SR in a video posted online on Thursday — but claimed that it was probably because the latter is “perceived as as scum” that SR editor Clare Rewcastle Brown allegedly hired him to attack Sarawak and national leaders.
“After all, it takes a scum to know another scum,” Abdul Rahman said in a post on his Facebook page.
Abdul Rahman, who was mocked by senior DAP leader Lim Kit Siang for believing Lester’s claims that SR forged documents on 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) to implicate Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, claimed that the Sarawakian journalist had wanted out from “falsely ‘criminalising’ the prime minister”.
The urban wellbeing, housing and local government minister added that he is sure that Lester is aware he will be subjected to intense public scrutiny and a thorough investigation by the police for having made the video confession, apart from defamation suits by those he implicated in the video.
“This ‘scum of the earth’ had apparently made peace with his God and decided to redeem himself… Let’s be frank. It is not easy to do a video confession and implicate big names. That takes a lot of guts even for a scum.
“Lester’s audacity to name the individuals was the reason why I insisted in my press conference that the police and INTERPOL should immediately step in to investigate and verify whether Lester’s devastating allegations were indeed true or not,” Abdul Rahman said, referring to an earlier news conference he called on the claims against SR.
On Friday, Kit Siang mocked the Umno MP as having egg on his face for backing Lester’s claims that SR had forged documents on 1MDB.
Lester on Thursday admitted to Malay Mail Online that he was paid to expose a convoluted conspiracy involving Malaysia’s opposition, SR and its UK-based founder Rewcastle-Brown in their alleged plot to unseat Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak through so-called doctored leaks of documents on 1MDB.
Abdul Rahman, who is also Barisan Nasional strategic communications director, later insisted that Lester’s allegations that SR had forged documents were still pertinent due to public interest in Putrajaya.
