KUALA LUMPUR: Penang Umno said its Bagan division leader’s private remarks about last week’s riot at Low Yat Plaza were made within a closed messaging group and should not be treated under the Sedition Act.
The party’s state chairman, Zainal Abidin Osman, said Bagan’s Shaikh Hussein Mydin had only expressed his personal opinion in the closed group.
The home minister, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, is among members of the group which uses the Telegram text chat service for mobile phones.
Zainal was quoted as saying Shaikh Hussein “never meant to incite anyone” and had only shared his opinion within the group and not on any publicly available online medium such as Facebook, Twitter, blogs or other sites.
Shaikh was arrested on Wednesday and detained overnight at federal police headquarters for investigation under the Sedition Act. He was released on Thursday.
“We were told that he gave full cooperation to the police. However, we are confident that he should not be charged for sedition,” said Zainal, quoted by Malaysian Insider.
The riot, by a group of about 100 people, had taken place after a young man was caught by shop assistants at the plaza allegedly for stealing a RM800 phone. Five people have been arrested in connection with the theft and a rampage in the plaza, and about 20 others in connection with the rioting that took place later. Among them was prominent blogger Papagomo (Wan Mohd Azri Wan Deris) who was detained for questioning for three nights before being released on Friday.
On Thursday, Umno activist Mohd Ali Baharom (“Ali Tinju”) was charged with sedition for remarks made in connection with the riot.
