Two student leaders from Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) have been suspended for two semesters and given a warning for bringing PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli to the campus last May.
Student council president Hanif Mahpa and the council's academic and intellectual secretariat chairman, Afiqah Zulkifli, were found guilty of the offence today.
Rafizi was invited by the council to talk about the goods and services tax (GST) on May 11.
While Rafizi was speaking, a group of campus officers arrived at the open space where the talk was held and seized the hailer from the politician. They ordered the students to disperse. A video of the incident then went viral on social media.
Student group Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia (Gamis) slammed the UIA disciplinary committee over its decision to punish the two student leaders.
"In the present situation in the country, the UIA administration is making things worse by suspending the students just for holding a GST talk without campus approval," Gamis president Mohd Imran Md Ishak said in a statement immediately after the suspensions were announced.
He said the programme, which was permitted at the beginning, was prohibited at the last minute because of orders from higher up.
"Gamis condemns UIA for the suspensions and we urge the campus administration to rescind the suspensions," he said, adding that a memorandum on the matter would be sent to the university.
He said Gamis was also urging all students to stand by their two suspended friends and show solidarity.
Imran also said a “Himpunan Mahasiswa” (student rally) would be organised if UIA refused to cancel the suspensions of the two student leaders.
"We hope students will be ready to gather at UIA when the time comes. Let us continue to fight against tyranny," he said.
