Police have opened an investigation paper on Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's claim of an attempt to topple the government.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today that three police reports have been lodged in connection with Zahid's speech on the matter.
"We are not going to get involved in Umno's political dispute but will take action if investigations revealed that there are attempts to oust the prime minister through illegal means," said Khalid.
"We will investigate all, political leaders, individuals, NGOs, anyone who tries to topple the government illegally," he told reporters at the federal police headquarters, Bukit Aman, this morning.
Zahid on Saturday said that an Umno leader is behind a plot to topple the government with support from opposition lawmakers.
The Umno vice-president said as home minister, he had learned that they were preparing statutory declarations (SD) to remove the government.
"There is an effort to obtain SDs among the opposition lawmakers and to pull in Barisan Nasional (BN) lawmakers to topple the government.
"I received this information from very trusted sources. This effort is going on... The strange thing is that it is led by an Umno, BN member," Zahid said when officiating the Ampang Umno division meeting.
He did not reveal the identity of the leader, saying that it would be "exposed on its own".
Zahid said a lawyer was already preparing to present a seven-page memorandum made up of yellow paper, with the SDs attached, to show that they represented the majority.
