Dr Mahathir said that as of now, it was still a rumour that Zeti would be investigated for corruption, but he added: “In cases like this rumours like that have some truth to them”.
The former prime minister was referring to talk, fueled by certain blogs, that Zeti who is part of the task force probing into RM2.6 billion transferred to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's personal accounts, would be investigated for corruption.
The task force comprises the police, Attorney-General’s chambers, the MACC and Bank Negara (BNM).
On July 28, Najib replaced the AG Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, a move some legal experts have called unconstitutional.
Seven MACC officers were then picked up and questioned by police over an alleged information leak in the commission’s investigations into 1MDB-linked company SRC International.
Both instances have drawn public ire and accusations that someone was meddling in the 1MDB probe.
On Friday, two top MACC officers who were critical over the policeprobe were transferred to the Prime Minister’s Department. Their transfers were today rescinded following huge public outcry.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has also not discounted the possibility that Bank Negara officials will be picked up over the information leaks.
