Johor MB again sounds alarm for Umno, warns of cancer eating the party

Umno leaders cannot allow the issues ailing the party to fester any longer, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin has said, less than a week after he hit out at the party for losing its direction.
He urged his peers to admit that Umno was in bad shape, and to address the problems before it was too late, The Star Online reported.
"If we let the issues drag, they will turn cancerous for the party," Khaled was quoted as saying at a press conference today after the Sembrong Umno division meeting's opening.
"We see him (Hishammuddin) as the future leader of the country and only time will tell," Khaled was quoted as saying. Hishammuddin is also Sembrong MP and the defence minister.
Johor Umno leaders have become more vocal after party deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was sacked from Cabinet as deputy prime minister and education minister on July 28, in a move seen as attempts by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to quell dissenters who have questioned his handling of debt-ridden state investor 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
Muhyiddin is the MP for Pagoh, in Johor, and is a stalwart of the southern state.
"We need new hope and we have to act fast to solve the issues, no more waiting. It is not easy for us but we have to do it," Khaled said today.
The Johor Umno chairman's statement came hours after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak urged party leaders not to attack him over the US$700 million (RM2.67 billion) deposited into his personal accounts.
Khaled first spoke out against the party on Tuesday, one day after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) announced that the funds transferred to Najib's accounts were donations.
In a Facebook post, Khaled had said on Tuesday Umno cannot keep quiet if "corruption becomes a culture or trust is betrayed".
"Umno cannot keep quiet when the party no longer champions the cause of Malays but is instead used to defend a few under the name of loyalty or discipline in adhering to leaders," he wrote.
Today, Khaled also said Umno leaders must start engaging with the youth to ensure the party's survival.
He said youth nowadays were vocal because they were voicing their rights, and not because they were against the government.
His own son, Akmal Saufi Mohamed Khaled, had urged Najib to explain the US$700 million deposited into the prime minister's accounts, and to prove that the funds were mere donations.
"They (the youth) are more educated and look at things from the global perspective and no longer at the local level," said Khaled today.
Hishammuddin has also appealed for answers over 1MDB's alleged wrongdoing.
"Right now, we would like to ask our party members to give the task force room to do their job. I also want to know about 1MDB," he was reported saying recently.
