Muhyiddin: Don’t be fooled by apple polishers

Umno deputy president keeps up the attack on Najib, 1MDB's dealings and Umno leadership
Muhyiddin-Yassin,-apple-polishers-
JOHOR BAHRU: Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin has urged all party leaders in the country not to be fooled by apple polishers so as not to let themselves be blinded to their own faults.
Speaking at Pagoh Umno’s divisional meeting, Muhyiddin said that when leaders let themselves be influenced by boot-lickers, they would only become arrogant and unaware of the current situation.
He did not mention names, but Umno president and Prime Minister Najib Razak has faced calls to resign over his handling of the affairs of the government’s debt-ridden investment company 1Malaysia Development Bhd and revelations that US$700 million (RM2.7 billion) was deposited in his private bank accounts two years ago, shortly before the general election.
Muhyiddin, who was dropped as deputy prime minister from Najib Razak’s cabinet last month, said: “Although I am no longer in the cabinet, should I keep quiet? As a leader we can’t just look straight ahead, look at the surroundings.”
“Sometimes we are surrounded by supporters who tell us ‘it is ok sir, things are good, do not worry sir, everything is ok sir, yes sir’. We don’t see (our own faults) but we feel proud,” he said.
He asked the audience to “figure out” out for themselves to whom he was referring to, without mentioning names.
However, he disclosed that he had spoken to Najib, who is Umno president and prime minister, and voiced his opinions.
“When we become a leader for too long there will be many people who would say ‘you are a great man for the nation’ but never say ‘this is wrong sir’. That was what I said to the prime minister. Am I wrong (to voice my opinion)?” he said.
Muhyiddin’s sacking on July 28 in a cabinet reshuffle came after he had made criticisms over several weeks on Najib and 1MDB, which comes under Najib’s oversight as finance minister, and extensive reports about dubious 1MDB financial transactions and investments.
His ouster came two days after he revealed at Cheras Umno that Najib had acknowledged a reported deposit of US$700 million in his personal bank accounts.
