ALOR STAR: I can explain. No problem. So said Umno president Najib Razak today when speaking to Alor Star Umno delegates about the controversial RM2.6 billion deposit in his private bank account in 2013 which has been said to be a political donation from a Middle Eastern source.
He said it was better for him to explain in private because public discussions could affect the party.
“I can explain. No problem, but not openly because it can affect the party,” he said, according to Malaysian Insider. “As long as there is no stealing from the people or violation of the law… as long as we follow this rule, we just have to do what is necessary for the party.”
Controversy has raged over the “donation” after the Wall Street Journal reported on a trail of financial transactions involving companies associated with 1Malaysia Development Bhd, the government-owned investment company under Najib’s supervision as prime minister and finance minister.
He had said the money was a “donation”, and the anti-corruption agency MACC later stated that the money had come from a Middle Eastern source. Earlier today an Umno divisional leader in Kepong said “an Arab king and prince” had given the money to help secure a victory for Umno and the Barisan Nasional in the 2013 general election.
Najib said the party needed funds in order to operate its political machinery, and even his critics, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, had said every political party needed funds.
“But we must never buy votes. When I was Umno Youth chief, did I buy votes? I helped the party with the machinery and the funds whenever needed. That is my principle,” he was quoted as saying.
Najib also sounded a warning about not taking him lightly. “People said that I am ‘lembut’ (soft)… don’t, there is a limit. I hold on to my principles,” he was reported to have said.
Political critics were caught off guard last month when Najib dismissed his deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and party vice-president Shafie Apdal in a cabinet reshuffle. He also dismissed the Attorney-General and elevated four MPs, members of the Public Accounts Committee, to the cabinet, causing planned hearings on 1MDB to be suspended.
