The Bahasa Malaysia daily's online site quoted Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir saying today that Najib had issued the ban during the Umno president's closed door meeting with the state's Umno committee meeting three days after the Cabinet reshuffle.
Zambry also said in the meeting, Najib had repeatedly reminded all to respect Muhyiddin, who is still the party's deputy president, as he had contributed a lot to the party.
"Maybe in terms of administration, they have a problem and by right, he (Najib) can find all kinds (of reasons). But his actions are different, he reminded everyone to respect Muhyiddin because he is still a senior party leader and a former deputy prime minister," he was quoted as saying.
On July 28, Najib reshuffled his Cabinet and in a shocking move, axed Muhyiddin, who was the deputy prime minister and education minister, from govenment.
Muhyiddin had been critical of Finance ministry-owned 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and many speculated his removal from Cabinet was due to this.
Despite being dropped, Muhyiddin had vowed to continue serving the party.
He was also confident that his position as deputy president is secure.
"My responsibility as Umno's deputy president is to help the president and supreme council members to manage the party and I will continue to do it.
"What is more important is to work for the party and country and I will do what is needed to be done," he had said two days after the reshuffle.
After being dropped, many Umno divisions, who are currently undergoing its meetings, started to withdraw their invitations to Muhyiddin.
