Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said the total showed a 10.7% rise or 1,974 more road accidents.
"Road accident fatalities are worrying, there was a 39.6% spike from 244 deaths last year to 330 people killed in the 15 days of Op Selamat 7/2015.
He said motorcyclists still formed the largest group of fatalities with 200 cases or 60.6%.
Noor Rashid said the annual accident death toll of at least 6,000 cases, which involved huge medical cost and vehicle damage worth billions of ringgit, showed an urgent need to proactively curb accidents on the road.
"Continuous education should be intensified... to reduce the figure by 20%," he said.
At the ceremony, 15 selected drivers comprising five bus drivers, five taxi drivers and five motorcyclists were presented with the Careful Driver Award. – Bernama
