The nomination and election process for the post of MIC president carried out by G Palanivel's supporters today is invalid and unofficial, the party's acting president Dr S Subramaniam says.

Subramaniam said the 2,800 MIC branch heads who gathered in Subang Jaya today agreed not to recognise the result of the presidential election that was carried out.

"We have already decided that all meetings or elections carried out by any other group, besides the current MIC interim central working committee (CWC) 2009, are unofficial and not acceptable in terms of the law.

"I was told there was a nomination for the post of MIC president in Sentul this morning. That's not valid, unofficial and not accepted by anyone, including the party," Subramaniam (photo) told reporters after officially opening a gathering with the MIC branch in Subang Jaya.

In the nomination process organised by Palanivel's supporters in Sentul today, the former minister of natural resources and environment was declared as the winner, unopposed, for the post of MIC president for the 2013-2016 term.

Subramaniam said the official nomination for the party's number one post would be held on Aug 21 and only the candidate to be elected on that nomination day would be the official winner.

If there is a contest for the post of president of the 68-year-old party, the election will be held on Sept 6, the health minister added.

Subra: Branch heads supoport Interim CWC actions

He said the gathering of branch heads today also unanimously supported several resolutions, including the loss of membership of five MIC members ipso facto, including Palanivel.

The other four MIC members who lost their memberships are vice-presidents S Sothinathan and S Balakrishnan, former general secretary A Prakash Rao and CWC member AK Ramalingam.

Subramaniam said the gathering today also supported appropriate actions to be taken by the Interim CWC 2009, according to instructions by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) as stated in the letters sent by the ROS dated Dec 5, Jan 19 and Feb 6.

The MIC crisis cropped up following differing opinions between Palanivel and Subramaniam, after the ROS issued a notice on Dec 5 asking the MIC to hold a party re-election.

In a letter to the Interim central working committee (CWC) 2009 general-secretary, A Saktivel, ROS director-general Mohammad Razin Abdullah stated that, ipso facto, Palanivel was no longer MIC president.

The letter also stated that Subramaniam would take over the duty from Palanivel as the acting MIC president.
