Shafie: If the people don’t want me, I will go

Better to be ousted by party members than to lose at next general election, says sacked minister
Shafie-Apdal,-umno
JITRA: Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal, sacked from the Cabinet last month, said today he would continue to serve the people as long as they wanted him and that he would step down if party members no longer needed his services.
“It is better to be ousted by party members rather than lose at the next general election,” he said to about 2,000 Umno members at the Jerlun divisional meeting
“I am the people’s representative. It is important to make the people confident with you because then they will trust you,” he said.
Shafie, who is MP for Semporna in Sabah, said several people had come up to him to ask about the controversial federal government investment arm 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
“They asked, ‘Datuk, what is this 1MDB?’ Is it wrong for us to ask this? As the people’s representative, we are not only obliged to listen to the people’s woes but we have to act as well. Having position is not important if in the end we lose in the next general election. This will happen if the people don’t trust us,” he said.
He noted that he had been accused of being one of 20 Umno leaders planning to oust the current government leadership and stated that the accusation was baseless.
“Someone wrote in a blog saying I am one of those trying to topple the government. I am the party’s vice-president. I was one of the people who started Umno in Sabah. Adoi. They said I’m among the leaders of this movement,” he said, sighing.
Shafie urged all leaders to think about the people’s welfare so that their intentions would continue to be pure in helping Malaysians.
“If we remember what happened to the Philippines in the 60s and 70s under the leadership of President Marcos, the Filipinos had to migrate to Europe and such to become cooks, nannies and even in Indonesia, it’s a rich country but their people had to go abroad. So I hope the government will manage our economy wisely and our people can enjoy a secure life,” he said.
