START OF CIVIL SERVICE REVOLT AGAINST NAJIB: MACC turns to God for help against evil

START OF CIVIL SERVICE REVOLT AGAINST NAJIB: MACC turns to God for help against evil
PUTRAJAYA - Troubled by uncertainty over its future investigations into state-owned 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), the country’s graftbusters held a special Islamic prayer session here today seeking Allah’s guidance to perform their duty and prevent people for the sin of corruption that would land them in hell.
Datuk Seri Zakaria Jaffar, the retiring deputy chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC), said today that their work is all part of their duty to abide by Allah's will to shield people from the sin of corruption.
Zakaria said it has been his life's mission to live up to his God-given responsibilities as a graft buster over his 33-year career, and believes that it is a goal that suits the MACC's pursuits.
“The Prophet said givers and takers of bribes will go to hell... so we can prevent people from going to hell,” he told journalists briefly after leading MACC officers in a special prayer session for divine intervention here.
Zakaria, who yesterday was officially replaced by Datuk Mohamad Jamidan Abdullah as the commission's head of management and professionalism, said he led the prayer to beseech Allah for guidance in dealing with “what we do not know in the future”.
He said there is nothing that can be done about the past, but they can pray that Allah will help them to create a better future for the country.
“Corruption stems from illegal activities. We ask (Allah) that our country be free of corruption,” he said.
Zakaria, however, did not answer a question on whether the special prayer session had anything to do with the recent crackdown on MACC officials in an ongoing probe on 1MDB.
The announcement of Zakaria's retirement as deputy chief commissioner ― which takes effect from August 1 ― happened on the same day police officers from Bukit Aman turned up to question senior MACC officier Datuk Bahri Mohamad Zin over an alleged information leak in the 1MDB probe by a muti-agency taskforce.
Bahri was the fourth person to be investigated over the alleged leak of documents from the debt-laden sovereign fund.

On Saturday, police raided the house and office of Ahmad Sazilee Abdul Khairi, a deputy public prosecutor seconded to the MACC, in connection with the 1MDB probe.
A day earlier, the MACC had said that there are no draft charge sheets as alleged by whistleblower site Sarawak Report as the graft probe on a former subsidiary of the 1MDB has yet to be completed.
The commission said it has yet to send investigation papers from its probe on SRC International Sdn Bhd ― formerly under 1MDB ― to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).
Pictures of the alleged charge sheet were published last week by Sarawak Report, which claimed to have obtained a copy of corruption charges that were in the final stages of being drafted by Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail against Najib and one other person connected to the 1MDB controversy.
Putrajaya said on Tuesday last week that Abdul Gani’s services as the Attorney-General was terminated effective July 27 due to health reasons, but confirmed he would remain a judicial and legal service officer until his compulsory retirement on October 6. - Malay Mail
